3 Must Have Traits for Success in Affiliate Marketing

As a refresher, affiliate marketing, is promoting someone else’s product, service, website, etc. in return for a commission.

It works like this: Merchants offer unique URL’s to affiliates (that would be you). Through those links, they trace the activity of people sent to their site, by way of your site. If they make a purchase, you get a small piece of that commission.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to earn a passive income, but it doesn’t happen overnight and there are three traits you should possess to become successful.

Affiliate Marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme. You aren’t going to generate thousands of dollars overnight. You need to remember the mantra of the turtle: “Slow and steady wins the race.”

Stick with it and over time, with effort and patience, your numbers may tick up.

A steady hand means you are patient, practical, and methodical. You keep track of your numbers, watch what works, and what doesn’t work. You consistently put in the time and effort to tweak and modify until you get it right.

Your metrics are going to help you make good decisions. And, those same metrics may change from day-to-day. All kinds of things affect consumers’ behavior – your job is to understand those trends and watch how the play out for you.

What other behavior is a hallmark of a steady hand with affiliate marketing? …

… Diversification.

Don’t put you eggs in one basket. Promote several different affiliates that pay out in different ways. Some affiliates offer a one-time pay out, while others offer recurring opportunities. You want a mixture of both and a variety of products to promote (but keep in mind, the products should circle around focus area – more on that later).

And finally – don’t give up. Keep tweaking. Keep changing, Keep learning.

You won’t succeed on every venture, but you can learn from each one!

2. Honesty

Your audience needs to trust you. If you are sneaky about affiliate marketing or are not being 100% transparent, people will sniff you out. And, if they get burned once, they may be apt to burn you –and not in equal measure.3 Must Have Traits for Success in Affiliate Marketing

An upset individual can burn the whole place down with a few strokes of their keyboard. Now, if you are honest and transparent, but get a troll, your followers will be very likely to defend you. On the other hand, if they also had a bad experience, they’ll be glad to join the troll and help set the place ablaze.

Honesty is truly the best policy. Always disclose your affiliate networks.

And don’t just share random affiliate links. Share products and websites you have researched, you trust, and that you would use yourself. Find merchants that offer excellent customer service. A good customer service department can smooth out any difficulties your followers might want to pin on you.

Not all merchants are created equal, so don’t treat them as such. Tell your audience why you love a product and the experience you had in purchasing the product.

3. Expertise

There are two levels of expertise you need to possess to be a successful affiliate marketer: Expertise in your subject area and expertise in affiliate marketing.3 Must Have Traits for Success in Affiliate Marketing

Expertise in your subject area is what you need to show to your followers. This is proven over time as you provide informational, helpful, and cutting-edge blog posts and insights. It also means listening to your loyal fans and learning about what is of concern to them. When you learn what they are concerned about you may address those concerns and gain more credibility.

Expertise also means staying focused on one area. We call this area your niche. This is a subject you are passionate about and can keep providing updated and helpful information about. Which is better, a general site about the outdoors or a site about camping? The answer is camping. Camping is a more focused area – a niche. Outdoors can cover so much information that it’s too general and you wouldn’t be able to dive deep. You’d have too much information to cover before you could even scratch below the surface.

Once you know and understand your niche, it will be much easier to find niche products to market as an affiliate.

Expertise in affiliate marketing is what will make you better. It means understanding the demand for a product and staying current with new trends in affiliate marketing. Technology is always changing, and if you don’t change with it, you’ll be using outdated models and could lose revenue.     I agree that steadfastness (and well-thought-out diversification), honesty and expertise are essentials in every kind of business, but especially so when the interface is through a computer screen.

    Expertise in your niche and in marketing can be developed and learned. Honesty and perseverance, however, are character traits that pretty much have to already be there.

    Nice Article! I just started out on my journey to Affiliate Marketing, as someone who has more experience than I, What strategy would you recommend for a beginner? I want to know where to direct my focus…I understand i need patience so I’m not worried about making money yet, however, I want to make sure I build a solid foundation, what do you recommend I focus on?

      I would always recommend concentrating on helping your visitors solve their problems by creating high quality and relevant content.

      Once your site becomes established you can start to look at other areas to work on such as gaining traffic and authority within your niche.
