How To Make Money From A Blog – Or Why Isn’t It Making Money?

Each month, the income of your blog is so minimal and you begin to wonder how to make money from a blog.

If you are just starting out on your online journey keep these nine questions in mind so you can start earning as soon as possible.

Before you start to question why you started blogging in the first place and definitely before you give up, ask yourself these nine questions!

How new is your blog?

First of all, this is a simple reality check. If your blog is pretty brand-spanking-new, it is unreasonable to think you’ll be rolling in cash.

Building a blog is building a business. It takes time and investment. Just because you are working from home doesn’t mean you don’t have to put in the time and effort.

Are you building a community?

The first step to gaining customers (or getting people to click on affiliate links) is getting them to visit your blog.

This doesn’t happen unless you are out in the community and offering another place for community. I’ve covered this extensively in my post, Seven Tried-And-True Tricks to Increase Your Blog’s Traffic

Call To Action ButtonAre you including a call-to-action?

Tell people what you want them to do.

Don’t be subtle.

Don’t beat around-the-bush.

Don’t hint.

Don’t imply.

Come out with it.

Ask them to join your mailing list.

Ask them to visit an affiliate’s site.

Ask them to buy your product.

Your visitors won’t know what you want from them unless you tell them.  This isn’t a one-and-done ask. Keep asking people. If they bought your product once, why wouldn’t they buy from you again? In fact, they are more likely to buy from you again!

Are you adding value to your customers?

Give your customers information they need or might find interesting. Don’t just talk about you. Don’t just give them updates about your business or product.

Give your readers content they find helpful. Talk about something a little bit off the beaten path. Remember, this is about building community. To figure out what to talk about ask the question:

What does this community like to talk about?

Give your customers something for free. Hook them. Maybe it’s a how-to e-book or an online class. Whatever you offer—make sure it is quality. If your freebie is crap, why would they want your actual product?

Are you using SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. If someone is googling a topic your blog covers, you want your blog to be in the top search results. This only happens if you are intentional about SEO.

Are you making use of affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is promoting someone else’s products on your site. It’s a simple way to bring in revenue, but you need to do it in the right way.

What’s the right way? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you marketing everything under the sun or are you marketing products you believe in?
You need to back and quality promote products you love and use.
  • Are you marketing products that your customers care about?

Track the sources of your revenue. Sometimes, they might be interested in products you don’t expect.

If you are selling a product, do you have testimonials or product reviews available?

Consumers are smart. Before they buy, especially from a new place, they want to make sure they aren’t being scammed.

What are you charging for your product?Dollar

If you are selling a product, are you charging too much? If so, you could be pricing out your potential customers.

On the other side of the coin, are you charging too little? Believe in your product enough to make a profit. If it takes you hundreds of sales to make a decent commission, think about increasing your price.

Are you talking to your customers?

Keep the lines of communication open. Tell your customers you receive their order. Tell them when it ships. Ask them to rate your product. Say thank you.

If you have a newsletter list, use it. Send customers updates on a regular basis. If you don’t leverage your newsletter, customers might not remember signing up for your list and delete your email without a second thought.

Whether you have had your blog for a while or you are just starting out keep in mind these questions and keep referring back to them.
