How To Start With An Online Business From Home – 3 Initial Questions

by | Mar 20, 2017 | How to.. | 8 comments

If you’ve wanted to know how to start with an online business from home I would advise you to begin with asking yourself three questions:

  • Why Do You Want A Online Business?
  • Who Is Your Competition?
  • How Will You Brand Your Business?

Answering these questions will give you a good basis for how to start your online business and should make it slightly easier to proceed, especially in the early days of building your business.

I’ve broken down these questions to give you some help in being able to answer them as fully as possible.

Why Do You Want An Online Business?  Can I Make Money Online

Creating (and maintaining) an online business takes commitment. It’s important to take time and analyze your goals. Figure out what you want to achieve and be specific.

Determine your short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals:

  • How will your website generate customer loyalty?
  • What kind of growth would you like to see?
  • How will your website add value to customers?

Without specific goals, you are a boat without paddles. You’ll be floating on the open water without the ability to guide and direct your next step. A changing wind or passing fad could push you off course. Once you are off course, it takes longer to get where you plan to go – if you even get there at all.

Who Is Your Competition?Who is your competition?

  • What other voices are out there talking about the same topic?
  • Is the market full of people talking about the same thing?
  • How can you make the topic new and fresh?
  • What is it that you have to offer that your competitors don’t offer?

There are a lot of voices out there crowding the streets. Analyzing your competition helps you find your unique voice. It helps you make your voice louder without shouting and fizzling out.

If you are a trusted voice in the industry, customers will listen to what you have to say.

Scoping out the competition will aid you in developing strategies to help customers come to you first.

Don’t expect to be top-dog right away. It takes time. A correct understanding of your goals and your competition, will help.

How Will You Brand Your Business?

Having a website is more than the content on the page. It is the visual and aesthetic qualities of the actual site. The colors and logos you use can either draw people in or cause them to click away.  Your Brand

If your site is tacky with cheesy graphics, even if you have the best content in the world, people won’t stick around. Visit a variety of websites and make notes of what you like or don’t like about them. What features are awesome? What stink?

Chances are you’ll start to see that a sleek, simple design is best. Find themes that resonate with your preferences, then modify and tweak them.

Choose colors you enjoy and that are complementary. You only need about two colors. And don’t use light text on a dark background. It is easier to read a light background.

If you are starting a website to help support your current brand, make sure the site looks like the current brand.

A picture is worth a thousand words, right?  So, give people visual cues that your blog is associated with your business.

If your business has a blue and green logo, but your blog has blue and red as its main colors, a customer may not realize the two are related. Don’t make your customers work for it.

Having your own business and being able to work from home is a great way to earn an income on your terms.  Don’t get me wrong it isn’t a walk in the park but once you have an established online busness the sky truly is the limit.

I think these three questions are very helpful and thought provoking for anyone who wants to start an online business. I have been working on a logo for my website which visitors can easily remember and associate with my business. You make a very good point about the relationship between content and aesthetic quality. You only get one chance to make a good first impression and that starts with the visual quality before one decides to read the content.

      Hello Roy

The attention span of someone on the internet is much smaller than in other areas of their life. I’m sure there must be some research on this going on somewhere in the world!

As internet marketers it is something that we must keep in mind or we’ll never be able to keep visitors engaged within our site.

      Thanks for visiting my site.

Wow, those three questions are the ones we are aware of yet we very often lack knowledge of.
Asking myself those questions made me realize the ‘obvious’ is not really obvious. I had a lot of blurry answers there.
Thank you for such an eye opening post, it really has helped me set up specific goals for my venture.

    • Jackie

You’re very welcome. I’m pleased the post helped you out.

  3. Cathy

Honestly, I’ve never thought of these questions except for the first one when I started my online business back in 2014. I knew I want an online business because I want to have more control over my time and finance.

It wasn’t until I started blogging, did I realize that there were a lot of competition in my selected niche. Instead of backing off, I try to find inspiration from other competitors and it works most the time.

As for branding, I happened to spend a great deal of time in the initial stages of my blog, so I am glad that that’s been taken care of. In my opinion, I think content matters more than visual and I am focusing more on that to get more traffic to my business site.

    • Jackie

Hey Cathy, thanks for stopping by.

I think starting an online business needs just as much thought and planning as any other business, don’t you?

I have to admit, branding was something that took a back seat in the beginning of my business but soon realised how important it is.

      Thanks again

    Hi Jackie,

I can think some reasons why I want an online business but I cannot answer the other two questions.

Also, I like your idea about goal setting. Until now, I just follow a routine that I create content and share it but without long term goals.

You gave some things to consider, thanks for sharing.

    • Jackie

Hello, thank you for your comment.

I’m so pleased that you found this post useful.

I found creating goals a great way to move forward so I would always recommend making some.

Good luck with your online business
